A dramatic religious scene by El Greco, featuring elongated figures and a celestial choir rendered in the artist's signature Mannerist style.
This work by El Greco, painted between 1596 and 1600, depicts the biblical scene of the Annunciation. The composition is divided into two distinct zones. The lower section features the Virgin Mary and the Archangel Gabriel, while the upper section is occupied by a celestial choir of angels. The artist employs his characteristic elongated figures and dramatic, flickering light to create a sense of spiritual agitation.
The colour palette is dominated by cool, ethereal tones, contrasted against the warm, golden radiance emanating from the Holy Spirit in the form of a dove. El Greco uses fluid, expressive brushwork to define the drapery and the atmospheric clouds, which seem to dissolve into one another. The spatial arrangement is unconventional, as the figures appear to float within a non-Euclidean environment. This rejection of traditional Renaissance perspective is a hallmark of the artist's mature style, developed during his time in Toledo.
The Archangel Gabriel, dressed in a flowing green robe, gestures towards Mary, who receives the message with a mixture of surprise and humility. Below them, a basket of lilies sits on the floor, a traditional symbol of purity. The upper register is crowded with angelic musicians, their forms blending into the swirling, nebulous background. This painting demonstrates the artist's ability to merge physical reality with a visionary, otherworldly experience. The composition avoids static balance, opting instead for a dynamic, upward-reaching energy that draws the eye through the canvas. It remains a primary example of the late Mannerist approach to religious narrative, where emotional intensity takes precedence over anatomical precision or architectural logic.
