A serene depiction of an orchard in St. Agatha, capturing the quiet atmosphere of a rural garden after a rain shower.
Gustav Klimt painted this work during his summer stay in St. Agatha in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. Unlike his later, highly decorative gold-leaf portraits, this piece reflects his interest in the natural world and the quiet atmosphere of rural life. The composition captures a damp, verdant orchard where a group of chickens forage among the grass.
Klimt employs a muted palette of greens, browns, and soft greys to convey the dampness of the earth following a rainfall. The trees, rendered with vertical emphasis, create a rhythmic structure across the canvas. Their trunks divide the space, guiding the eye toward the small, scattered figures of the poultry. The brushwork is controlled yet atmospheric, focusing on the texture of the wet grass and the soft plumage of the birds.
This painting demonstrates Klimt's ability to observe his surroundings with precision. He avoids the overt symbolism found in his allegorical works, choosing instead to document the stillness of a summer afternoon. The light is diffused, typical of the conditions after a storm, which softens the edges of the forms and creates a sense of calm. The inclusion of the chickens adds a domestic, grounded element to the scene, contrasting with the towering, somewhat sombre trees.
As a member of the Vienna Secession, Klimt often sought to break away from traditional academic painting. While this work remains representational, it shows his move toward a more personal, subjective interpretation of nature. The focus on pattern and surface texture, even in a rural subject, hints at the stylistic direction he would take in his later career. This print captures the subtle tonal shifts of the original oil painting, offering a view into a quiet moment in the Austrian countryside at the turn of the century.
