A delicate ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, capturing a quiet social scene at a teahouse overlooking the sea.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a scene at a teahouse located at Wada no Ura. The composition features three figures: a man standing to the right, holding a small object, and two women seated on a bench to the left. The man wears a striped kimono and holds a pipe, while the women are dressed in patterned garments. The teahouse structure provides a frame for the view of the sea beyond, where small boats are visible on the water. A small settlement is depicted on the distant shore.
Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. This work demonstrates his characteristic style, which often features slender, graceful figures and a delicate use of line. The print includes calligraphic text at the top, a common feature in ukiyo-e prints of the period, which often provided context or poetic commentary related to the scene. The colour palette is restrained, relying on soft tones that harmonise with the paper texture.
The teahouse setting was a popular subject in Edo-period art, representing a space for social interaction and leisure. Harunobu captures a quiet moment of daily life, focusing on the gestures and attire of the figures. The perspective is flattened, typical of the period, with the architectural elements of the teahouse serving to divide the foreground from the distant maritime view. The print reflects the technical precision of the woodblock carving process, where each colour required a separate block. This specific work is part of a series that explores various locations and social encounters, providing a glimpse into the aesthetic preferences of the urban population in eighteenth-century Japan.
