A detailed study of classical faun sculptures by Dutch artist Jean Grandjean, rendered in black chalk and white heightening on blue paper.
This study by Jean Grandjean captures two views of a classical faun sculpture housed within the Capitoline Museum in Rome. Grandjean, a Dutch artist who spent his final years in Italy, produced this work during his residency in the city. The drawing demonstrates his technical proficiency in rendering the human form through the use of black chalk and white heightening on blue paper, a common practice for artists of the period seeking to replicate the tonal qualities of marble statuary.
The composition presents the figures in a side-by-side arrangement, allowing the viewer to observe the subtle variations in posture and the handling of the drapery. The fauns are depicted in a relaxed, contrapposto stance, each holding a flute to their lips. Grandjean focuses on the anatomical precision of the figures, using light and shadow to define the musculature and the smooth texture of the stone. The dark, hatched background serves to isolate the figures, directing attention to the sculptural quality of the subjects.
Grandjean's work reflects the broader European interest in classical antiquity during the late eighteenth century. Artists frequently visited the Capitoline collections to sketch the ancient marbles, which served as essential training for their own compositions. This drawing is a direct record of such an exercise. It provides insight into the academic rigour of the time, where the study of antique sculpture was considered the primary method for mastering the depiction of the idealised human body. The preservation of this work on blue paper maintains the original tonal balance intended by the artist, offering a clear view of his draftsmanship and his approach to capturing three-dimensional form on a two-dimensional surface.
