A delicate watercolour study by Piet Mondrian, featuring a single white rose in a glass set against a bold, warm orange background.
Before Piet Mondrian became known for his strict grid-based abstractions, he produced a significant body of work focused on floral subjects. White Rose in a Glass represents a departure from his later geometric rigour, yet it retains a clear interest in the essential form of the object. The composition is simple: a single rose sits within a glass, positioned against a saturated, warm background.
This work demonstrates Mondrian's early experimentation with colour and light. The rose itself is rendered in cool, pale tones of violet and white, which contrast sharply with the intense orange field surrounding it. This use of complementary colours creates a visual tension that draws the eye directly to the flower. The brushwork is fluid and delicate, allowing the watercolour medium to bleed slightly into the paper, which softens the edges of the petals and the glass.
Unlike his later works, which sought to remove all traces of the physical world, this piece captures a moment of quiet observation. It reflects the artist's transition period, where he began to simplify his subjects to their most basic components. The glass is depicted with minimal lines, suggesting its transparency through subtle shading rather than realistic detail. This approach allows the viewer to focus on the balance between the organic shape of the flower and the flat, expansive colour of the background. It is a study in reduction, showing how Mondrian stripped away unnecessary detail to arrive at a clearer, more direct representation of his subject. This print captures the subtle variations in the watercolour wash, preserving the texture and luminosity of the original paper.

White Rose in a Glass - Piet Mondrian
Artist Biography
Piet Mondrian
Mondrian's move towards abstraction was gradual but decisive. He was influenced by Cubism after moving to Paris, but he ultimately distilled his art to its most essential elements. This radical simplification led to the birth of De Stijl, a Dutch artistic movement that sought universal harmony through pure abstraction. Mondrian believed that by reducing painting to its fundamental components – line, colour, and form – he could reveal a deeper, more spiritual reality.
Though he lived and worked in Europe for much of his life, Mondrian eventually settled in New York City during World War II. His final paintings, such as "Broadway Boogie Woogie," reflect the vibrant energy of his new urban environment. This iconic work, with its pulsating rhythms and dynamic composition, stands as a testament to Mondrian's enduring quest to capture the essence of modern life through the language of pure abstraction. His legacy continues to inspire artists and designers today.
