A 1903 oil painting by Maximilien Luce depicting the French village of Méréville through rhythmic, broken brushwork and a soft, atmospheric palette.
Maximilien Luce painted this view of Méréville in 1903, a period when his technique moved away from the strict pointillist dots of his earlier career toward a more fluid, broken brushwork style. The composition captures the rolling terrain of the French countryside, with the village church tower rising above the dense foliage. Luce employs a palette of soft greens, ochres, and lavender tones, which work together to suggest the quality of light on a summer day.
Luce was a central figure in the Neo-Impressionist circle, often associated with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac. While he shared their interest in optical mixing, his approach remained grounded in a direct observation of nature. In this work, the application of paint is rhythmic and deliberate. Each stroke contributes to the overall structure of the scene, building the form of the hills and the architecture of the village without relying on hard outlines. The sky is rendered in a series of short, horizontal marks that create a sense of atmosphere and depth, contrasting with the more varied, multi-directional marks used for the grassy foreground and the trees.
This piece demonstrates the artist's ability to balance colour theory with a genuine sense of place. By focusing on the interplay between the built environment and the natural surroundings, Luce provides a quiet, observational study of rural France. The absence of human figures allows the viewer to focus entirely on the texture of the paint and the harmony of the colour relationships. It is a characteristic example of his later work, where the rigour of his earlier training is softened by a more expressive, painterly touch.
