A classic Op Art composition by Victor Vasarely, using geometric distortion to create the illusion of a three-dimensional sphere.
Victor Vasarely, a central figure in the development of Op Art, created Vega 200 in 1968. This work demonstrates his interest in the relationship between geometric form and optical perception. The composition relies on a grid of circles that undergo systematic distortion. By varying the size and shape of these elements, Vasarely generates the illusion of a three-dimensional sphere emerging from a flat surface.
The visual effect is achieved through precise mathematical calculation rather than intuitive gesture. The central area features larger, more circular shapes that appear to push forward toward the viewer. As the grid moves toward the edges of the frame, the circles become elongated and compressed, suggesting a curvature that defies the physical flatness of the canvas. This manipulation of the grid is a hallmark of the Vega series, which Vasarely began in the late 1960s.
Colour plays a functional role in this optical experience. The contrast between the red, blue, and green tones assists in defining the depth of the sphere. The interaction of these hues creates a flicker effect, where the eye struggles to fixate on a single point. This physical response from the viewer is the primary objective of the work. Vasarely intended for his art to be accessible and universal, moving away from the subjective expressionism that dominated earlier decades. By focusing on the mechanics of vision, he transformed the canvas into a site of active engagement. The work remains a clear example of how rigid geometry can produce fluid, kinetic sensations without the use of actual movement.
