A large-scale abstract work from 2001 featuring gestural crimson forms on a pale ground, characteristic of Cy Twombly's late-career focus on rhythmic, fluid mark-making.
This work belongs to the series titled Blooming, A Scattering of Blossoms & Other Things, produced by Cy Twombly in 2001. The series consists of ten large-scale canvases, each featuring a pale, yellowish ground against which the artist has applied gestural, crimson forms. These shapes suggest floral motifs, though they remain firmly within the realm of abstraction. Twombly employs a technique where the paint is applied with physical force, allowing it to drip vertically down the surface of the canvas. This creates a tension between the static, circular forms and the gravity-driven lines that descend from them.
Twombly, who spent much of his career in Italy, often drew inspiration from classical literature, mythology, and the natural world. In this series, the title provides a framework for interpreting the visual data, yet the execution avoids literal representation. The repetition of the crimson clusters across the expansive, light-toned background creates a rhythmic quality. The paint application varies in density, with some areas appearing thick and textured, while others are thinned to reveal the canvas beneath. The vertical drips act as a record of the artist's physical movement and the fluidity of the medium itself. By focusing on the act of mark-making, Twombly invites the viewer to consider the relationship between colour, space, and the passage of time. The work does not seek to capture the appearance of flowers, but rather the sensation of their presence and the cycle of growth and decay. It is a study in balance, where the controlled placement of the red forms contrasts with the unpredictable nature of the paint as it runs down the surface.
