A lithograph from El Lissitzky's 1923 portfolio, depicting a geometric, mechanical figure designed for a futuristic theatrical performance.
This lithograph, titled Troublemaker, originates from El Lissitzky’s 1923 portfolio, Figurines. The Three-Dimensional Design of the Electro-Mechanical Spectacle: Victory Over the Sun. The work relates to the artist's conceptualisation of a futuristic opera, which sought to replace human actors with mechanical puppets. Lissitzky envisioned these figures as geometric entities, moving through space according to the laws of physics rather than traditional theatrical performance.
The figure is composed of sharp, angular forms and precise geometric shapes. A prominent orange triangle dominates the centre, providing a stark contrast to the muted grey and black elements that define the character's torso and limbs. The composition is balanced, with the figure appearing to hover against a neutral background. Lissitzky employs a minimalist approach, stripping away unnecessary detail to focus on the relationship between form, volume, and motion. The figure possesses a sense of kinetic energy, suggesting a body in mid-motion or a machine in operation.
As a leading figure of the Russian Avant-Garde, Lissitzky applied his training in architecture and engineering to his graphic work. This print reflects his interest in the intersection of art and technology. The figures in the portfolio are not merely static illustrations, but rather blueprints for a new mode of performance. The clean lines and deliberate placement of shapes demonstrate the artist's mastery of spatial organisation. This piece is a representative example of the Constructivist aesthetic, which prioritised functional design and the rejection of traditional representational art. The work remains a significant document of early twentieth-century experimental theatre and design, capturing the optimism and radical vision of the period.
