A study of a Parisian labourer by Paul Gavarni, rendered in delicate watercolour and graphite.
Paul Gavarni, born Sulpice Guillaume Chevalier, is recognised for his keen observation of Parisian life during the mid-nineteenth century. This work, titled The Suburbs: Stock Raiser and Captain, captures a figure from the fringes of the city. The subject stands in a relaxed pose, viewed from behind, wearing the practical attire of a labourer. The artist employs a light, fluid touch with graphite and watercolour, allowing the paper to provide the primary tone for the background.
Gavarni often focused on the social types found in the outskirts of Paris, documenting the dress and demeanour of the working class with precision. The figure wears loose trousers held by braces over a simple shirt, suggesting the physical nature of his occupation. The artist avoids unnecessary detail, choosing instead to define the form through subtle shading and delicate line work. The shadow cast by the figure anchors him to the ground, providing a sense of presence without the need for a complex environment.
This piece reflects the shift in French art towards the depiction of contemporary life. Rather than idealising his subjects, Gavarni presents them as they appear in their daily routines. The muted palette of earthy tones and soft greys reinforces the understated nature of the scene. The artist's signature is visible near the lower right, confirming his hand in this study of character. It is a clear example of his ability to convey personality and social standing through posture and clothing alone. The work remains a valuable record of the social fabric of nineteenth-century France, captured with an economy of means that characterises Gavarni's best graphic output.
