A late Mannerist masterpiece by El Greco, depicting a visionary scene from the Book of Revelation with elongated figures and dramatic, expressive lighting.
The Opening of the Fifth Seal, also known as The Vision of Saint John the Divine, is one of the final works produced by El Greco during his time in Toledo. Commissioned for the church of the Hospital de Tavera, the painting depicts a passage from the Book of Revelation. Saint John the Divine occupies the left side of the composition, his arms raised in a gesture of ecstasy as he witnesses the souls of the martyrs receiving white robes.
El Greco employs a highly individual style, characterised by elongated figures and a rejection of traditional spatial depth. The figures are arranged in a rhythmic, almost sculptural grouping, their bodies twisting in expressive poses that convey spiritual agitation. The colour palette is dominated by cool blues, stark whites, and flashes of ochre and green, set against a turbulent, dark sky. The artist uses light not to define physical form in a naturalistic sense, but to create a sense of otherworldly illumination that unifies the composition.
The painting was left unfinished at the time of the artist's death. Its radical departure from the balanced proportions of the High Renaissance reflects the Mannerist tendency toward emotional intensity and subjective distortion. The figures appear to float in a space that lacks a clear horizon, focusing the viewer's attention on the psychological state of the subjects rather than their physical environment. This work remains a primary example of the artist's late style, where the boundaries between the material and the spiritual are blurred through fluid brushwork and dramatic, non-naturalistic colour choices.
