A refined seventeenth-century etching by Simone Cantarini, depicting the Holy Family in a moment of quiet repose during their flight into Egypt.
This etching by Simone Cantarini depicts the Holy Family during their flight into Egypt, a subject frequently explored by artists of the seventeenth-century Italian Baroque. Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, demonstrates his technical proficiency through fluid, calligraphic line work that defines the forms of the figures and the surrounding environment. The composition centres on the Virgin Mary, who holds the Infant Jesus, while Saint Joseph sits nearby, observing the scene with a gentle expression. Two cherubs hover in the upper left, adding a celestial element to the domestic intimacy of the moment.
Cantarini uses cross-hatching and varied line weights to create volume and shadow, particularly within the drapery of the garments. The ruins upon which the family rests serve as a traditional iconographic element, symbolising the transition from the old order to the new. The background remains relatively sparse, allowing the focus to stay on the interaction between the figures. The artist captures a sense of quietude, moving away from the dramatic tension often associated with the period in favour of a more tender, humanised portrayal of the sacred narrative.
As a printmaker, Cantarini was known for his ability to translate the grace of his master, Reni, into the medium of etching. His work reflects the classicising tendencies of the Bolognese school, prioritising clarity of form and balanced composition. This print offers a clear view into the stylistic priorities of the era, where the focus remained on the emotional resonance of the subject matter through precise, controlled mark-making. The work is a fine example of the period's approach to religious printmaking, combining technical skill with a focus on narrative clarity.
