A powerful diptych by Richard Hamilton, The Citizen explores the political protests in Northern Ireland through a blend of realism and abstraction.
The Citizen is a diptych by British artist Richard Hamilton, created between 1981 and 1983. The work addresses the political situation in Northern Ireland during the late 20th century, specifically the 'dirty protests' conducted by republican prisoners at the Maze Prison. Hamilton based the composition on television footage of prisoners who refused to wear prison uniforms, choosing instead to wrap themselves in blankets.
The painting is divided into two distinct panels. The right panel depicts a bearded man with long hair, draped in a dark blanket, standing in a pose that recalls traditional religious iconography. His appearance is reminiscent of historical depictions of Christ, a visual parallel that Hamilton uses to comment on the suffering and martyrdom associated with the political conflict. The figure is rendered with a degree of realism, contrasting with the surrounding environment.
The left panel features a large, abstract area of brown, swirling marks against a pale background. These marks represent the excrement smeared on the walls of the prison cells by the inmates as part of their protest. By separating the figure from the environment of the protest, Hamilton creates a tension between the human subject and the visceral reality of his surroundings. The use of a diptych format forces the viewer to reconcile the dignified, almost saintly portrayal of the individual with the chaotic, abject nature of the protest itself. This work is an example of Hamilton's interest in how mass media imagery shapes public perception of political events. It avoids simple political commentary, instead focusing on the visual language of protest and the way media representations influence our understanding of historical figures and their actions.
