A visceral Surrealist masterpiece by Salvador Dalí, depicting anatomical fragmentation as a metaphor for the Spanish Civil War.
Painted in 1936, this work by Salvador Dalí functions as a visual manifestation of the anxiety surrounding the Spanish Civil War. The composition features a monstrous, self-strangling figure constructed from distorted human anatomy. The limbs are elongated and disjointed, suggesting a body tearing itself apart. This anatomical fragmentation serves as a metaphor for the internal conflict and societal collapse occurring within Spain at the time.
The figure rests upon a barren, desolate plain, set against a bright, cloud-filled sky. This contrast between the grotesque subject and the clear atmosphere creates a sense of unease. The inclusion of boiled beans scattered at the base of the structure provides a mundane, domestic element that clashes with the violent imagery above. Dalí claimed the beans were a necessary addition to the composition, grounding the nightmarish scene in a recognisable, albeit absurd, reality.
Technically, the painting demonstrates Dalí's mastery of academic precision applied to irrational subject matter. The smooth, polished surfaces and careful modelling of the flesh tones draw from the traditions of classical painting, which makes the surreal distortion of the anatomy appear more tangible. The work avoids explicit political symbols, opting instead for a visceral, psychological representation of conflict. By focusing on the physical disintegration of the body, Dalí captures the horror of civil strife without relying on conventional war imagery. The painting remains a primary example of how Surrealist artists utilised the subconscious to process contemporary historical events.
