A fine drypoint engraving by the Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, depicting the charitable act of Saint Martin sharing his cloak with a beggar.
This drypoint engraving depicts the classic hagiographic scene of Saint Martin of Tours. The saint, mounted on a horse, uses his sword to divide his cloak, offering a portion to the shivering beggar kneeling at his side. The Master of the Amsterdam Cabinet, also known as the Master of the Housebook, is recognised for his mastery of the drypoint technique. This method allowed for a softer, more painterly quality in the lines compared to the rigid precision of traditional copperplate engraving.
The composition focuses on the interaction between the two figures. Saint Martin is rendered with a youthful, serene expression, while the beggar is depicted with a more weathered, realistic appearance. The artist employs fine, hatched lines to create volume in the clothing and the musculature of the horse. The background remains sparse, which directs the viewer's attention to the narrative action. The halo surrounding the saint's head provides a subtle indication of his status, yet the scene retains a grounded, human quality.
This work is a representative example of late fifteenth-century German printmaking. The artist's ability to convey texture, from the fur trim on the saint's garments to the rough terrain beneath the horse, demonstrates a high level of technical skill. The print captures a moment of charity, rendered with the characteristic sensitivity of the period. The drypoint burr, which holds ink to create these velvety lines, is particularly evident in the darker areas of the composition. This print remains a significant example of early graphic art, reflecting the transition from medieval stylistic conventions toward the more observational approaches of the Northern Renaissance.
