A sixteenth-century etching by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau featuring strapwork, human figures, and fruit motifs, designed as a model for decorative arts.
This etching by Jacques Androuet du Cerceau represents the Northern Renaissance fascination with strapwork, or rolwerk, a decorative style characterised by flat, ribbon-like bands that curl and fold upon themselves. Du Cerceau was a prolific architect and engraver whose pattern books provided essential motifs for craftsmen across Europe, influencing furniture design, metalwork, and architectural ornamentation throughout the sixteenth century.
The composition features a central, symmetrical structure defined by these characteristic scrolls. Two figures are positioned on either side, their bodies integrated into the frame, while a third head emerges from the top centre. The figures interact with clusters of fruit, which are rendered with precise, fine lines. The artist employs a clear, graphic approach, using hatching to suggest volume and shadow within the rigid, geometric framework of the scrolls. The design balances the human form with abstract, architectural elements, creating a sense of controlled movement.
Du Cerceau's work is notable for its clarity and technical precision. His prints were intended as models for artisans, and this particular design demonstrates the versatility of the strapwork motif. The inclusion of naturalistic fruit elements softens the severity of the architectural scrolls, providing a contrast between the organic and the constructed. This piece offers a view into the decorative vocabulary of the period, where classical influence merged with the imaginative, often fantastical, sensibilities of the Northern Renaissance. The print remains a record of the aesthetic priorities of the era, where the ornamentation of functional objects was treated with the same rigour as fine art.
