A classic reclining nude by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring his signature elongated forms and warm, muted colour palette.
Amedeo Modigliani produced a series of reclining nudes during his time in Paris, often working under the patronage of Léopold Zborowski. This particular composition features the characteristic elongation of form that defines the artist's mature style. The figure occupies the horizontal space with a sense of relaxed posture, her arms raised behind her head. Modigliani employs a simplified anatomical structure, prioritising the rhythmic curve of the torso and limbs over strict naturalistic representation.
The colour palette relies on warm, earthy tones, contrasting the pale flesh of the subject against the darker, muted background. The facial features are rendered with the artist's signature mask-like quality, featuring almond-shaped eyes and a slender, elongated nose. The brushwork remains relatively smooth, allowing the focus to rest upon the silhouette and the interplay of volumes. Unlike many of his contemporaries who experimented with fragmented cubist planes, Modigliani maintained a focus on the human figure, drawing inspiration from both Renaissance masters and the stylistic conventions of African sculpture.
This work reflects the artist's interest in the psychological presence of his subjects. The gaze is directed away from the viewer, creating a sense of detachment. The background is divided into distinct zones of colour, which serve to frame the figure without providing a specific spatial context. By stripping away extraneous detail, the artist directs attention to the essential lines of the body. This approach to the nude remains one of the most recognisable aspects of his output, demonstrating a clear departure from the academic traditions of the nineteenth century. The print captures the subtle gradations of tone and the specific warmth of the original oil application, providing a clear view of the artist's approach to form and colour.

Reclining Nude - Amedeo Modigliani
Artist Biography
Amedeo Modigliani
Modigliani sought to capture the inner essence of his subjects rather than merely replicating their physical appearance. His portraits and nudes, such as 'Portrait of Maude Abrantes' and 'Nude with Hat', are instantly recognisable for their elegant simplicity and psychological depth. He drew inspiration from various sources, including African masks and ancient sculpture, distilling them into a modern visual language that was entirely his own. His sculptures, though fewer in number, share the same stylistic traits, showcasing his mastery of form and line.
Despite his tragically short life, Modigliani's impact on modern art is undeniable. His paintings and sculptures continue to captivate viewers with their timeless beauty and emotional resonance. Collectors are drawn to Modigliani's work for its sophisticated elegance and the sense of intimacy it evokes, making his portraits a striking addition to any contemporary home.
