A study of a male figure in black chalk, demonstrating the fluid line and anatomical precision characteristic of the seventeenth-century Bolognese school.
This study by Simone Cantarini captures a male figure in a recumbent pose, demonstrating the artist's command of anatomical form and light. Cantarini, a pupil of Guido Reni, adopted the Bolognese tradition of drawing, which prioritises fluid lines and expressive modelling. The figure is rendered with confident strokes of black chalk, creating a sense of volume through subtle hatching and cross-hatching. The artist focuses on the tension of the torso and the relaxed posture of the limbs, suggesting a moment of rest or exhaustion.
Cantarini's technique reveals the influence of his training, particularly in the way he constructs the musculature. The drawing displays a characteristic economy of means, where the paper surface itself contributes to the highlights of the skin. The shadows are applied with precision, defining the contours of the back and the drape of the cloth around the hips. This work provides insight into the preparatory methods of the seventeenth-century Italian school, where such studies were essential for developing larger compositions. The sketch is not merely a technical exercise, but a demonstration of the artist's ability to imbue a simple pose with physical presence. The composition is balanced, with the diagonal orientation of the body guiding the viewer's eye across the page. This fine art print preserves the texture of the original chalk, allowing for a close examination of the artist's hand and the immediacy of his mark-making process.
