A classic Op Art screenprint by Victor Vasarely, featuring a geometric grid that creates an illusion of three-dimensional depth.
Victor Vasarely, a central figure in the development of Op Art, created Quasar Dia as a study in optical perception and geometric precision. The work employs a grid of rhomboid shapes that shift in scale and tone to suggest a three-dimensional curvature. By manipulating the size and shading of these individual units, Vasarely creates a visual effect where the flat surface appears to bulge or recede, depending on the viewer's focus.
This composition relies on the systematic arrangement of monochromatic and grey-scale elements. The transition from dark to light tones across the grid generates a sense of depth that is entirely illusory. Vasarely sought to remove the artist's hand from the final product, favouring a mathematical approach to composition that could be replicated through mechanical means. This philosophy aligned with his desire to make art accessible and integrated into the modern environment.
The work is characteristic of his later period, where he refined his 'alphabet plastique' to explore the relationship between form and colour. By limiting the palette to black, white, and various shades of grey, the focus remains strictly on the structural manipulation of the grid. The resulting image functions as a kinetic experience, as the eye attempts to resolve the conflicting spatial cues provided by the distorted geometry. It is a precise exercise in visual mechanics, demonstrating the artist's mastery over spatial ambiguity and his ability to transform simple shapes into complex, dynamic structures.
