A refined nineteenth-century engraving by Jean Louis Potrelle, depicting the French Baroque master Nicolas Poussin.
This engraving by Jean Louis Potrelle depicts the French Baroque painter Nicolas Poussin. Potrelle, a skilled engraver active in Paris during the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, produced this work after a painting held in the Musée Royal. The print captures the subject in a three-quarter view, wearing a heavy cloak that drapes across his shoulders. His expression is composed, with a direct gaze that conveys the intellectual rigour associated with the seventeenth-century master.
The technique employed here is characteristic of the period, utilising precise cross-hatching and stippling to model the form of the face and the texture of the fabric. The tonal range is controlled, moving from the deep shadows of the drapery to the lighter, more delicate lines defining the facial features. By translating a painted original into the medium of engraving, Potrelle makes the likeness of Poussin accessible to a wider audience, a common practice for disseminating the images of historical figures during this era.
Nicolas Poussin (1594-1665) was a central figure in the development of French classicism. His influence on subsequent generations of artists was considerable, and portraits such as this one were often produced to honour his contribution to European art history. The inscription at the base of the print, 'D'Après le Tableau du Musée Royal', confirms its status as a reproductive print, intended to document the appearance of the original painting. The clean, formal presentation of the portrait reflects the aesthetic values of the time, prioritising clarity and anatomical accuracy. This print offers a window into the way historical artists were commemorated in the nineteenth century, providing a refined addition to any collection focused on portraiture or the history of printmaking.
