A 1915 portrait of Beatrice Hastings by Amedeo Modigliani, featuring his signature elongated forms and mask-like facial features.
Amedeo Modigliani painted this portrait of the South African writer and poet Beatrice Hastings in 1915. During their turbulent relationship in Paris, Hastings became one of his most frequent subjects. This work displays the stylistic hallmarks of the artist: an elongated neck, an oval face, and almond-shaped eyes that lack pupils. These features reflect his interest in African sculpture and the reduction of human form to essential, rhythmic lines.
The subject is positioned before a door, a setting that provides a dark, vertical backdrop to her figure. Her dark clothing merges with the shadows of the background, directing the viewer's attention to the pale, mask-like quality of her face. The colour palette is restrained, relying on deep browns and blacks to contrast with the warm, ochre tones of the skin. Modigliani uses a simplified approach to anatomy, prioritising the overall silhouette over realistic detail. The brushwork is visible but controlled, creating a surface that feels both tactile and flattened.
Modigliani often painted his sitters with a sense of detachment. In this portrait, Hastings appears composed, yet the lack of eye detail creates an enigmatic presence. The composition is tight, focusing entirely on the head and shoulders, which emphasises the verticality of the subject. This piece captures the specific aesthetic Modigliani developed during his time in the Montparnasse district, where he moved away from traditional portraiture toward a more personal, stylised interpretation of the human figure. The work remains a representative example of his output during the mid-1910s, a period defined by his focus on portraiture as a means to explore character through simplified geometry.

Artist Biography
Amedeo Modigliani
Modigliani sought to capture the inner essence of his subjects rather than merely replicating their physical appearance. His portraits and nudes, such as 'Portrait of Maude Abrantes' and 'Nude with Hat', are instantly recognisable for their elegant simplicity and psychological depth. He drew inspiration from various sources, including African masks and ancient sculpture, distilling them into a modern visual language that was entirely his own. His sculptures, though fewer in number, share the same stylistic traits, showcasing his mastery of form and line.
Despite his tragically short life, Modigliani's impact on modern art is undeniable. His paintings and sculptures continue to captivate viewers with their timeless beauty and emotional resonance. Collectors are drawn to Modigliani's work for its sophisticated elegance and the sense of intimacy it evokes, making his portraits a striking addition to any contemporary home.
