A classic Impressionist portrait by Pierre-Auguste Renoir, depicting the Cahen d'Anvers sisters in their distinctive pink and blue sashes.
Pink and Blue, painted in 1881, depicts Alice and Elisabeth Cahen d'Anvers, the daughters of a wealthy Jewish banker. Renoir captures the two girls in a formal studio setting, their figures rendered with the soft, feathery brushwork characteristic of his mature style. The composition focuses on the contrast between the two sisters, who are dressed in nearly identical lace-trimmed frocks, distinguished primarily by the colour of their sashes: one pink, one blue.
Renoir employs a light-filled palette to define the textures of the girls' dresses and their hair. The background remains somewhat indistinct, allowing the viewer to focus on the expressions of the subjects. The painting reflects the artist's transition away from the strict tenets of early Impressionism toward a more classical approach to portraiture, influenced by his travels in Italy. He maintains the soft edges and luminous quality of his earlier work while adopting a more structured arrangement of the figures.
The work is a notable example of Renoir's ability to capture the innocence of childhood through a refined, painterly technique. The girls stand side by side, their hands lightly touching, creating a sense of intimacy. The red carpet beneath their feet provides a warm contrast to the cooler tones of the blue sash and the delicate pink accents. This portrait remains one of the most recognised images of children in nineteenth-century French art, demonstrating the artist's technical skill in handling light and fabric. The painting is currently held in the collection of the Museu de Arte de São Paulo.
