A pair of oval architectural paintings by Hubert Robert, capturing the grand scale of St. Peter's Basilica and the Grotto of Posillipo.
Hubert Robert, often referred to as Robert des Ruines, was a French painter known for his fascination with architectural structures and the passage of time. This pair of oval paintings demonstrates his ability to manipulate light and shadow within grand, cavernous spaces. The first work depicts the colonnade of St. Peter's Basilica in Rome during a conclave, capturing the temporary wooden partitions erected to house the cardinals. The second work portrays the Grotto of Posillipo, a tunnel near Naples, rendered with a focus on the dramatic transition from dark, rugged stone to the bright light at the tunnel's exit.
Robert spent over a decade in Rome, where he studied the city's ancient ruins and contemporary architecture. His work often blends accurate observation with a sense of theatre. In these pieces, the human figures are small in scale, which serves to emphasise the immense proportions of the stone architecture. The use of the oval format creates a sense of enclosure, drawing the viewer into the depths of the depicted spaces. The lighting is carefully managed, with shafts of sun illuminating specific areas of the floor or walls, creating a contrast between the solid masonry and the transient nature of the human activity within.
These paintings reflect the eighteenth-century interest in the Grand Tour, where travellers sought out both the classical remnants of Rome and the natural wonders of the Italian countryside. Robert's technique involves fluid brushwork that defines the texture of weathered stone and the soft folds of clothing worn by the figures. By pairing these two distinct locations, the artist provides a study in architectural variety, moving from the structured, religious setting of the Vatican to the raw, geological form of the Neapolitan grotto. The works remain fine examples of the architectural fantasy genre that defined much of Robert's career.
