A 1917 still life by Joan Miró, featuring a tabletop arrangement of domestic objects rendered in a bold, Fauvist-inspired style.
Painted in 1917, Nord-Sud represents an early stage in the career of Joan Miró. During this period, the artist engaged with the visual language of Fauvism and Cubism, experimenting with bold colour and flattened perspective. The composition features a tabletop arrangement containing a variety of objects, including a birdcage, a potted plant, a pair of scissors, and a book by Goethe. A central plaque bears the title of the work, Nord-Sud, which refers to the Paris Metro line. This inclusion of text and everyday objects demonstrates the influence of contemporary avant-garde movements on his early practice.
The application of paint is energetic, with visible brushwork and a palette dominated by saturated tones. Miró uses these colours to define the forms of the objects rather than to replicate their natural appearance. The space is compressed, with the table surface tilted upwards to display the items clearly. This approach creates a sense of immediacy and decorative rhythm across the canvas. The inclusion of the birdcage and the specific literary reference suggests a personal, domestic setting, yet the treatment remains detached and analytical. This work offers a view into the formative years of an artist who would later move towards surrealist abstraction. It captures a moment of transition where the artist balanced traditional still life subjects with a modern, expressive application of paint. The composition avoids a single point of focus, instead encouraging the eye to move across the various shapes and patterns arranged on the table.
