A serene rural scene by Maximilien Luce, capturing the rolling hills of Bessy-sur-Cure through rhythmic, expressive brushwork and a balanced, earthy palette.
Maximilien Luce, a prominent figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement, produced this work during his time in the Yonne region of France. The painting depicts the rolling hills of Bessy-sur-Cure, a subject that allowed the artist to explore the interaction between light and the natural environment. Luce employs a technique characterised by short, rhythmic brushstrokes, which break down the visual field into distinct colour components. This approach creates a sense of movement across the hillside, where patches of green, ochre, and warm orange suggest the changing seasons or the specific quality of afternoon light.
In the foreground, figures are positioned within the meadow, providing a sense of scale to the expansive slope behind them. The composition is anchored by a cluster of trees, which serves as a vertical counterpoint to the diagonal incline of the terrain. Unlike the more rigid, scientific pointillism of Georges Seurat, Luce's application of paint remains fluid and expressive. He maintains a focus on the atmospheric conditions of the French countryside, capturing the quietude of rural life without resorting to idealisation.
The palette is balanced, relying on earthy tones that reflect the agricultural character of the region. The sky, though limited in its portion of the canvas, provides a soft, airy contrast to the textured hills. This work demonstrates the artist's transition from his earlier, more urban-focused subjects toward a deeper engagement with the rural environment. It is a representative example of his later period, where his interest in colour theory remained present but became secondary to the overall mood and light of the scene. The print captures these subtle variations in tone and texture, offering a clear view of the artist's brushwork and the structural composition of the original oil painting.
