A study in colour theory and divisionist technique, this early work by Robert Delaunay uses rhythmic, block-like brushstrokes to depict a celestial disc.
Landscape with Disc, painted by Robert Delaunay between 1906 and 1907, represents a period of experimentation with colour theory and divisionist technique. During these early years, Delaunay moved away from traditional representation, adopting a method of applying paint in small, distinct rectangular strokes. This approach, influenced by the work of Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, creates a rhythmic surface where light and form are constructed through the juxtaposition of individual hues.
The composition is dominated by a central, luminous disc, which acts as a celestial anchor within the frame. Surrounding this shape, the sky is rendered in a series of concentric, radiating bands of colour. These bands transition through shades of pink, violet, and blue, creating a sense of movement that draws the eye toward the centre. Below this atmospheric display, the ground is depicted with similar block-like brushwork, suggesting foliage and terrain through the interaction of cool blues and deep purples. In the foreground, more defined floral elements provide a contrast to the abstract treatment of the background, grounding the scene while maintaining the overall decorative quality of the work.
This painting captures a moment in the development of modern art where the focus shifted from the accurate depiction of nature to the exploration of optical effects. By breaking the image into a mosaic of colour, Delaunay invites the viewer to perceive the scene as a collection of light frequencies rather than static objects. The work remains an example of the transition from the structured logic of Neo-Impressionism toward the more radical abstraction that would define Delaunay's later career. The application of paint is deliberate, with each stroke contributing to the unity of the surface, resulting in a composition that balances geometric order with the fluidity of light.
