A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu, featuring a woman and her attendant in a serene, coastal setting.
This woodblock print by Suzuki Harunobu depicts a woman in a black hood accompanied by a young attendant. The scene captures a quiet moment of travel, with the figures positioned against a stylised, wavy background that suggests a body of water or a coastal setting. Harunobu is credited with the development of nishiki-e, or brocade prints, which allowed for the use of multiple colours in a single image. This technical advancement transformed the medium, moving away from the limited palettes of earlier eras.
The composition relies on the slender, elongated proportions characteristic of Harunobu's figures. The woman, draped in a dark, hooded garment, holds a closed umbrella, while her attendant carries an open yellow parasol and a small lantern. The interaction between the two figures is subtle, defined by their posture and the gentle tilt of their heads. The artist employs a muted palette, relying on soft earth tones, charcoal greys, and pale yellows to create a sense of atmospheric calm.
Harunobu's work often focused on the daily lives of women in Edo-period Japan. His approach to figure drawing prioritises grace and poise over anatomical realism. The background, rendered with simple, rhythmic lines, provides a sense of movement without distracting from the primary subjects. The print demonstrates the artist's ability to balance negative space with decorative elements, such as the patterns on the attendant's kimono. This piece reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the mid-eighteenth century, where the focus shifted toward lyrical, poetic representations of urban life and leisure. The print remains a clear example of the refinement achieved during the peak of the nishiki-e movement.
