A classic Ukiyo-e woodblock print by Katsushika Hokusai, depicting the powerful Kirifuri Falls with rhythmic lines and a distinct blue-toned palette.
Kirifuri Falls, part of the series Tour of the Waterfalls in Various Provinces, demonstrates the technical mastery of Katsushika Hokusai during his later career. This woodblock print depicts the famous waterfall in Shimotsuke Province, known for its mist-like appearance. Hokusai employs a stylised approach to the water, using bold, rhythmic lines to suggest the force and movement of the cascade as it descends over the jagged rock face.
The composition balances the sheer power of the natural elements with the presence of human observers. Figures are positioned at the base of the falls and along the upper path, providing a sense of scale and inviting the viewer to engage with the scene from a human perspective. The palette relies on Prussian blue, a pigment that became accessible in Japan during this period, alongside earthy tones for the surrounding cliffs and foliage. The contrast between the white foam of the water and the darker rock formations creates a clear visual hierarchy.
This work is a representative example of Hokusai's interest in the natural world and his ability to translate the physical properties of water into graphic form. The print reflects the conventions of the Ukiyo-e tradition, where the artist prioritises clear outlines and flat areas of colour to convey the essence of a location. By focusing on the specific characteristics of the waterfall, Hokusai captures a sense of place that transcends simple documentation. The print remains a study in how traditional woodblock techniques can represent the dynamic qualities of nature through careful line work and colour application.
