A seminal work of Metaphysical Art by Carlo Carrà, featuring simplified geometric forms and a quiet, meditative atmosphere.
Carlo Carrà, a central figure in the development of Italian modernism, painted Il bersaglio in 1921. This work belongs to his Metaphysical period, a phase characterised by the suspension of time and the use of stark, simplified forms. The composition presents a quiet, almost dreamlike scene where architectural elements are reduced to their most basic geometric shapes. A large, beige wall dominates the centre, providing a flat backdrop for a small, blue structure with a green roof. To the right, a yellow wall adds a sharp contrast in colour, while a solitary, leafless tree stands in the foreground, its branches reaching into the pale sky.
The painting avoids traditional perspective, opting instead for a sense of stillness that invites the viewer to contemplate the relationship between the objects. The human figure, barely visible near the entrance of the blue structure, appears secondary to the geometry of the buildings. Carrà uses a palette of muted earth tones, punctuated by the brighter blue and yellow, to create a sense of isolation. The sea, visible on the far left, provides a thin horizon line that anchors the composition. This work reflects the artist's shift away from the dynamic energy of Futurism toward a more meditative, static approach to painting. By stripping away unnecessary detail, Carrà focuses on the essential qualities of the objects, creating an atmosphere that feels both familiar and strange. The clarity of the light and the precise edges of the forms contribute to the sense of mystery that defines his work from this period. It is a study in balance, colour, and the quiet power of simple, everyday structures placed in an ambiguous, timeless setting.
