A 1916 oil painting by Gustav Klimt, capturing the village of Unterach on the Attersee with a flattened, mosaic-like perspective and bold colour blocks.
Gustav Klimt painted this view of Unterach on the Attersee in 1916. During his later years, Klimt spent his summers in the Salzkammergut region of Austria. These retreats provided him with a quiet environment to focus on his painting, away from the social demands of Vienna. This work captures the village architecture along the lake shore, rendered with the artist's characteristic attention to surface pattern and colour.
The composition is notable for its flattened perspective. Klimt removes the horizon line, stacking the houses and foliage vertically across the canvas. This approach creates a dense, mosaic-like effect. The architecture is defined by clear, geometric forms, while the surrounding trees and shrubs are depicted with short, rhythmic brushstrokes. The colour palette is dominated by deep greens, earthy tones, and the striking red of the lakeside buildings, which contrast against the pale yellow of the upper structure.
Klimt often used a telescope to study his subjects from a distance, which contributed to the compressed, almost abstract quality of his later works. The water at the bottom of the frame is treated as a reflective surface, echoing the colours of the buildings above. This painting demonstrates his move away from the gold-leaf ornamentation of his earlier period toward a more direct, painterly observation of the natural world. The work remains a clear example of his mature style, where the distinction between the subject and the decorative surface becomes blurred through his application of paint.
