A 1920 Purist still life by Le Corbusier, featuring a guitar and bottle rendered with geometric precision and a muted, balanced palette.
Guitare verticale (1ère version), painted in 1920, represents the core principles of Purism, a movement co-founded by Le Corbusier and Amédée Ozenfant. This aesthetic sought to move away from the fragmented nature of Cubism, favouring instead a return to order, clarity, and the representation of objects as universal, geometric types. The composition is structured around a tabletop arrangement, featuring a bottle, a guitar, and other geometric forms.
Le Corbusier employs a controlled, restrained palette, focusing on muted tones that allow the viewer to concentrate on the relationships between the shapes. The bottle on the left is rendered with a sense of volume, yet it remains flattened against the background, a characteristic technique of the period. The guitar, partially obscured and integrated into the background, provides a rhythmic curve that balances the rigid, rectangular forms of the other objects. The painting avoids unnecessary detail, stripping the subjects down to their essential, recognisable forms.
This work reflects the artist's architectural background, as the canvas is treated with the same precision and spatial logic as a building plan. The interplay between the verticality of the guitar and the horizontal planes of the table creates a stable, balanced image. By reducing the still life to these fundamental components, Le Corbusier aims to evoke a sense of harmony and permanence. The work is a clear example of the Purist desire to create art that is as logical and functional as the modern machine age, rejecting decorative excess in favour of a clean, rational visual language. The composition remains grounded in the tradition of the still life, yet it is transformed through a modern lens, prioritising the interaction of form, light, and shadow over realistic representation.
