A striking woodcut by German Expressionist August Macke, featuring simplified figures and bold, graphic contrasts.
August Macke was a central figure of the German Expressionist movement, particularly associated with the Der Blaue Reiter group. This woodcut, titled Greeting, originates from the portfolio New European Graphics, Portfolio III: German Artists. It demonstrates the artist's interest in simplified forms and the stark contrast achievable through the medium of the woodcut.
The composition features two central figures, rendered with minimal detail, standing in a natural setting. To the left, a smaller figure appears on horseback, introducing a sense of movement and narrative ambiguity. Macke uses the woodcut technique to create bold, graphic shapes, relying on the interplay between the dark ink and the light paper to define the forms. The trees and foliage are reduced to abstract, rhythmic patterns, which frame the figures and provide a sense of depth without resorting to traditional perspective.
Unlike his more colourful paintings, this work relies entirely on monochromatic values. The lines are direct and unadorned, reflecting the influence of folk art and primitive aesthetics that fascinated many artists of the early twentieth century. The figures possess a sculptural quality, their poses suggesting a quiet, contemplative interaction. This print offers a glimpse into the graphic output of a short-lived career, cut tragically short during the First World War. It remains a clear example of the Expressionist desire to strip away academic artifice in favour of direct, emotional expression through simplified form and high-contrast imagery.
