A 1896 courtroom sketch by Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, capturing the testimony of Alexandre Ribot during the Panama scandal trial.
This work captures a specific moment during the 1896 trial of Émile Arton, a central figure in the Panama scandal. Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, known for his keen observation of Parisian life, attended the proceedings to document the legal drama. The drawing features Alexandre Ribot, a prominent French politician, providing testimony. The artist employs a rapid, sketch-like technique, using lithographic crayon to define the figures with minimal lines.
The composition focuses on the interaction between the witness and the court officials. The figures are rendered with a sense of immediacy, reflecting the artist's ability to capture character and atmosphere in a fleeting moment. The background remains sparse, allowing the viewer to concentrate on the expressions and postures of the men involved in the legal proceedings. The use of light and shadow is subtle, relying on the texture of the paper and the varying pressure of the crayon to create depth.
This piece offers a glimpse into the political climate of late 19th-century France. Toulouse-Lautrec avoids formal portraiture, opting instead for a documentary approach that prioritises the energy of the courtroom. The presence of the artist's monogram in the lower right corner confirms the authenticity of this study. It remains a clear example of the artist's interest in the social and political realities of his time, moving beyond his usual subjects of cabaret performers and nightlife. The work is preserved in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, providing a record of the Panama scandal trials that gripped the French public during this period.
