A detailed fine art print of a Late Antique textile fragment, featuring stylized animal motifs and geometric borders woven in wool and linen.
This textile fragment, identified as a portion of a sleeve, originates from the Late Antique period in Egypt. It displays the characteristic Coptic style of weaving, which often combined linen foundations with woollen decorative elements. The piece features two horizontal bands of ornamentation, separated by a repeating wave-like pattern. Within these bands, stylized animal figures appear in a simplified, graphic manner. The figures exhibit a high degree of abstraction, typical of the period, where natural forms were adapted to fit the constraints of the loom and the aesthetic preferences of the time.
The construction relies on a plain-weave linen base, upon which the decorative motifs were worked in wool. The contrast between the light-coloured ground and the darker, woven figures provides visual clarity to the design. The borders consist of continuous, rhythmic loops that frame the central animal motifs. These motifs include birds and other creatures, rendered with minimal detail but clear silhouettes. The edges of the fragment show signs of wear and fraying, which reveal the underlying structure of the weave and the density of the woollen threads used for the patterns.
Such fragments provide evidence of the clothing styles and decorative techniques employed in the Mediterranean world during the transition from classical antiquity to the early medieval era. The survival of this piece allows for an examination of the technical skill involved in creating patterned garments. It demonstrates a functional approach to decoration, where the ornamentation is integrated directly into the structure of the fabric rather than applied as a surface treatment. The piece remains a record of the material culture of the period, reflecting the methods of production and the visual vocabulary of the weavers who created it.
