A detailed reproduction of a Coptic textile fragment, featuring geometric patterns and stylized motifs from a late antique shoulder band.
This textile fragment originates from the Coptic period in Egypt, dating to the late antique era. It represents a portion of a shoulder band, or clavus, which was a decorative element applied to tunics during this time. The piece displays a series of repeating circular motifs, each containing geometric or floral-like patterns, separated by smaller, stylized figures. The weave structure is characteristic of the period, utilising wool for the decorative elements against a linen ground.
The design demonstrates the aesthetic preferences of the era, where geometric precision met symbolic representation. The vertical orientation of the band suggests its original function as a decorative strip running from the shoulder to the hem of a garment. Such textiles were often preserved in the arid conditions of Egyptian burial sites, allowing for the survival of these delicate fibres. The contrast between the dark, saturated wool threads and the lighter linen background remains visible, even after centuries of degradation.
This fragment provides insight into the technical capabilities of weavers in late antique Egypt. The use of tapestry weave allowed for the creation of complex, multi-coloured patterns that were integrated directly into the fabric structure. The motifs, while abstract, reflect a synthesis of Mediterranean and local Egyptian artistic traditions. The preservation of such fragments allows for the study of ancient garment construction and the social status associated with specific decorative patterns. This print captures the texture and historical character of the original textile, offering a view into the material culture of the period.
