An atmospheric 1888 etching by James Ensor depicting small figures beneath the towering, skeletal trees of the Groenendael forest.
This etching by James Ensor, titled 'Figuren in het bos bij Groenendael', captures a quiet, atmospheric moment within the Belgian forest. Executed in 1888, the work demonstrates Ensor's technical proficiency with the needle and acid, utilising fine, delicate lines to build a sense of depth and texture. The composition focuses on the verticality of the trees, which dominate the upper two-thirds of the frame, creating a screen that obscures the distance. At the base, small, indistinct figures are positioned, providing a sense of scale and human presence against the vast, skeletal forms of the woodland.
Ensor, primarily known for his later, more grotesque and satirical paintings, produced a significant body of graphic work during the 1880s. These etchings often explore light, shadow, and the subtle interplay of atmosphere. In this piece, the artist avoids the chaotic energy of his carnival scenes, opting instead for a restrained, observational approach. The etching process allows for a precise rendering of the bark and the tangled branches, which appear almost like a web against the lighter background. The contrast between the dark, dense foreground and the lighter, more ethereal upper reaches of the forest creates a quiet tension.
This print is an example of Ensor's ability to capture mood through minimal means. The figures are rendered with just a few strokes, yet they anchor the scene, inviting the viewer to contemplate the scale of the natural environment. The work reflects the artist's interest in the Belgian countryside, a recurring subject in his early graphic output. It remains a clear example of his mastery of the etching medium, showing a disciplined hand that contrasts with the more expressive, painterly style he would adopt in his later career.
