A hauntingly beautiful illustration by Edmund Dulac from the 1915 edition of Dreamer of Dreams, featuring an ethereal figure with polar bears.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac originates from the 1915 publication, Dreamer of Dreams, written by Queen Marie of Romania. Dulac, a French-born artist who settled in London, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century book illustration boom. His work for this volume demonstrates his mastery of atmospheric, ethereal compositions, often characterised by a synthesis of European fairy-tale traditions and Eastern stylistic influences.
The image depicts a central female figure draped in translucent, star-dusted white garments, standing amidst a pair of polar bears. The composition relies on a stark contrast between the deep, dark indigo of the night sky and the luminous, pale forms of the subjects. Dulac employs a delicate line quality, particularly in the rendering of the veil and the subtle textures of the bears' fur. The scene possesses a quiet, otherworldly quality, typical of his approach to narrative fantasy. The figure holds a small, red object, providing a singular point of colour against the cool, monochromatic palette of the arctic setting.
Dulac was known for his meticulous attention to the physical book as an object, often overseeing the typography and layout to ensure a cohesive aesthetic experience. His illustrations for Dreamer of Dreams reflect his ability to translate the narrative tone of the text into visual form, creating images that exist in a space between reality and myth. The print captures the fine details of his original watercolour technique, preserving the soft washes and precise ink work that define his contribution to the Golden Age of Illustration. This piece remains a representative example of his capacity to evoke a sense of wonder through controlled, precise draftsmanship and a sophisticated understanding of light and shadow.
