A classic example of Neo-Impressionist pointillism by Charles Angrand, capturing a quiet urban scene through a meticulous application of colour dots.
Charles Angrand was a significant figure within the Neo-Impressionist movement, known for his application of scientific colour theory to the canvas. This work, dated 1887, demonstrates the artist's mastery of pointillism, a technique involving the application of small, distinct dots of colour that blend in the viewer's eye to form a cohesive image.
The composition depicts a couple walking away from the viewer along a quiet urban thoroughfare. Angrand uses a restrained palette, relying on the juxtaposition of light and shadow to define the figures and the surrounding architecture. The street lamps and the distant silhouette of a lone pedestrian provide a sense of scale and atmosphere, typical of the quiet, observational nature of Angrand's work during this period. The surface of the painting is composed of thousands of individual marks, creating a shimmering effect that captures the quality of light on a pavement.
Unlike some of his contemporaries who focused on the bustling energy of Parisian life, Angrand often turned his attention to more solitary, contemplative scenes. The figures are rendered with a degree of anonymity, their backs turned to the viewer, which invites a focus on the texture and the optical mechanics of the paint application rather than a narrative of the individuals themselves. The work reflects the rigorous approach of the Neo-Impressionists, who sought to move beyond the intuitive methods of the Impressionists toward a more systematic and objective representation of light and form. This print captures the granular detail of the original oil painting, preserving the specific character of Angrand's brushwork and his careful balance of tone.
