A dynamic example of Lyrical Abstraction by Gerard Schneider, featuring bold, gestural brushstrokes set against a vivid green background.
Gerard Schneider, a Swiss-born painter who spent much of his career in France, remains a primary figure in the development of Lyrical Abstraction. This movement emerged in post-war Paris as a response to the rigid structures of earlier geometric abstraction. Schneider favoured a spontaneous approach, allowing the physical act of painting to dictate the final form on the canvas.
In this work, the artist employs a bold, saturated green as the primary field. Against this backdrop, he applies sweeping, gestural brushstrokes in yellow, black, blue, and white. The application of paint is direct and energetic, revealing the speed and pressure of the brush. The yellow forms curve across the centre, creating a sense of movement that contrasts with the static, dark mass of black pigment. A singular, vertical red stroke provides a sharp counterpoint to the more fluid shapes, adding a sense of tension to the composition.
Schneider rejected the idea of preparatory sketches, preferring to engage with the canvas in an immediate, intuitive manner. His work avoids representational imagery, focusing instead on the emotional weight of colour and the rhythm of the mark-making process. The interplay between the opaque black areas and the lighter, more translucent yellow strokes creates a sense of depth, despite the overall flatness of the picture plane. This piece demonstrates his mastery of balance, where disparate colours and shapes are held together by the force of his gestural language. It is an example of his mid-career output, where his confidence in handling large-scale forms became increasingly apparent. The work invites the viewer to observe the physical properties of the paint and the deliberate, yet seemingly impulsive, nature of the artist's hand.
