A detailed graphite study by Willem de Famars Testas, capturing a traditional Egyptian shaduf and a cargo boat observed during his travels.
This graphite study by the Dutch artist Willem de Famars Testas captures two distinct observations from his travels in Egypt. The upper portion of the sheet depicts a figure operating a shaduf, a traditional irrigation tool used to lift water from the Nile. The artist focuses on the physical exertion of the worker, using light, precise pencil strokes to define the anatomy and the mechanical structure of the lever. Beside this figure, a handwritten note identifies the subject as a shaduf in Egypt.
The lower portion of the composition features a cargo boat, labelled by the artist as a 'barque marchande'. The drawing details the rigging and the heavy load of the vessel, reflecting the artist's interest in the daily commerce and river transport of the region. Testas, who spent significant time in the Middle East during the mid-nineteenth century, produced numerous sketches of this nature, documenting the local customs and infrastructure he encountered.
As a draughtsman, Testas employed a clean, observational style. He avoided heavy shading, preferring to allow the white of the paper to provide form and clarity to his subjects. This approach creates a sense of immediacy, as if the viewer is looking directly into the artist's sketchbook. The work provides a glimpse into the ethnographic interests of European artists during the nineteenth century, who sought to record the specificities of life along the Nile. The composition is balanced by the verticality of the shaduf pole and the mast of the boat, creating a cohesive page that serves as a record of both human labour and maritime activity. The preservation of the original annotations adds a layer of historical authenticity to the piece, connecting the viewer to the artist's own process of documentation and study.
