A classic lithograph by M.C. Escher featuring interlocking fish in a radial, infinite-regression pattern.
Circular Fish is a lithograph by the Dutch graphic artist M.C. Escher. Created in 1958, the work demonstrates his fascination with the mathematical concept of tessellation and the division of a plane. The image features a series of fish figures that interlock in a radial pattern, drawing the eye toward the centre of the composition. As the fish approach the middle, they diminish in size, creating a sense of infinite regression.
Escher utilised a strict monochrome palette to define the boundaries between the figures. The contrast between the black and white shapes allows the viewer to perceive the fish as both positive and negative space. This play on perception is a hallmark of his work, where the boundaries between figure and ground become fluid. The circular arrangement suggests a continuous cycle, reinforcing the geometric precision that defines his approach to printmaking.
Unlike his more complex architectural illusions, this piece focuses on the rhythmic repetition of a single organic form. The fish are stylised, with simplified features that allow them to fit perfectly into the surrounding shapes. By arranging these forms in a circular motion, Escher creates a dynamic sense of movement within a static medium. The work remains a clear example of his ability to merge rigorous mathematical logic with artistic expression. It invites the viewer to observe the underlying structure of the design, where every element occupies a specific place within the whole. The print is a study in symmetry and balance, reflecting the artist's interest in how simple shapes can be manipulated to fill a two-dimensional surface without gaps or overlaps.
