Descrizione
A pastoral scene by George Stubbs featuring cattle near a stream, rendered with the artist's signature anatomical precision and observational clarity.
George Stubbs, a British painter known for his anatomical precision and observation of animals, produced this work during the mid-eighteenth century. The composition features a group of cattle gathered near a water source, with a young figure seated nearby. Stubbs applies his characteristic attention to the physical form of the animals, capturing the musculature and stance of the white cow in the foreground with scientific accuracy. The surrounding environment is rendered with a focus on natural light and shadow, creating a sense of calm within the rural setting.
Stubbs spent much of his career documenting the livestock of the British gentry. His approach to painting animals was informed by his own anatomical studies, which he conducted through detailed dissections. This background allowed him to move beyond the stylised depictions common in the era, offering instead a grounded representation of the subjects. The trees and foliage are painted with a soft, atmospheric quality that contrasts with the clarity of the cattle. The palette consists of earthy tones, including ochre, brown, and muted greens, which unify the scene. This work reflects the broader interest in agricultural life and the pastoral tradition that occupied many artists of the period. The placement of the figures and the animals suggests a balanced, orderly arrangement, typical of the artist's compositions from this decade. Collectors of British art often value Stubbs for his ability to combine technical rigour with a quiet, observational style that avoids unnecessary drama.

Cattle by a Stream - George Stubbs
Artist Biography
George Stubbs
He was born in Liverpool, the son of a currier (a leather worker). He was largely self-taught. In his twenties he spent eighteen months in a farmhouse in Horkstow, Lincolnshire, dissecting horses. He suspended the carcasses from the ceiling using hooks and pulleys, peeled back the layers of skin and muscle, and drew every stage. The results were published as The Anatomy of the Horse (1766), one of the most accurate anatomical studies ever produced by an artist. The book established his reputation.
His horse portraits are commissioned works: wealthy landowners wanted their racehorses painted. Stubbs obliged, but his understanding of equine anatomy gave the paintings a presence that other sporting painters could not match. Whistlejacket, a life-size portrait of a chestnut stallion rearing against a plain background, is among the most striking animal paintings ever made. There is no landscape, no rider, no context. Just the horse.
He also painted dogs, exotic animals (a zebra, a rhinoceros, a moose), and rural scenes with labourers and haymakers. He experimented with enamel painting on ceramic tablets made by Josiah Wedgwood. He was elected to the Royal Academy but refused to submit a diploma piece, which meant he was never made a full Academician. He died in 1806, at eighty-one.
