A haunting Symbolist depiction of the ancient city of Babylon, featuring winged lamassu and a distant, ethereal ziggurat by Frantisek Kupka.
Frantisek Kupka, a Czech artist who spent much of his career in Paris, produced this evocative depiction of Babylon in 1906. The work reflects the Symbolist interest in ancient civilisations, mythology, and the dreamlike reconstruction of historical settings. Kupka employs a distinct atmospheric perspective, where the monumental ziggurat appears to float in a hazy, ethereal distance, separated from the foreground by a vast expanse of water or mist.
In the foreground, the composition is grounded by the presence of winged lamassu, the protective deities of Mesopotamian art. These stone figures, with their human heads and bull bodies, stand as silent sentinels over the scene. Below them, figures and horses are rendered with a sense of quiet activity, their forms partially obscured by the cool, teal-toned light that permeates the entire image. The colour palette is dominated by shades of turquoise, teal, and muted ochre, which contribute to the otherworldly quality of the composition.
Kupka was known for his technical versatility, moving from illustration and social satire to the abstract experiments for which he is often associated. This piece, however, demonstrates his earlier focus on narrative and atmospheric depth. The architectural details of the ziggurat, with its tiered structure and decorative elements, suggest a fascination with the archaeological discoveries of the period. The painting avoids a literal, documentary approach, favouring instead a poetic interpretation of the ancient city. The interplay between the solid, carved stone of the foreground statues and the shimmering, almost translucent depiction of the city creates a tension between the tangible world and the realm of historical imagination. This print captures the fine details of the original brushwork, preserving the specific tonal shifts that define the work's unique mood.

Artist Biography
Frantisek Kupka
Kupka's artistic approach involved a synthesis of Symbolism and abstraction, evident in works such as "Danse Macabre" and "Ballad of Epona". He sought to capture movement and energy through colour and form, often drawing inspiration from music and mathematics. His Orphist style, characterised by its use of vibrant colours and geometric shapes, aimed to evoke spiritual and emotional responses in the viewer, rather than depicting the external world.
Today, Kupka's art appeals to collectors seeking pieces that bridge the gap between historical movements and contemporary sensibilities. His works offer a unique combination of intellectual depth and visual appeal, making them a compelling addition to modern collections. The enduring quality of Kupka's vision lies in his ability to transform complex ideas into visually arresting compositions.
