A classic Op Art screenprint by Victor Vasarely, featuring a precise grid of geometric shapes and saturated colours to create optical depth.
Alphabet VR is a representative example of the systematic approach Victor Vasarely applied to visual perception. As a primary figure in the Op Art movement, Vasarely sought to create a universal visual language based on a limited set of geometric forms and colours. This work demonstrates his method of combining basic shapes, such as circles, squares, and rhomboids, within a rigid grid structure to manipulate the viewer's spatial awareness.
The composition relies on the interaction of flat planes of colour. By placing contrasting hues adjacent to one another, Vasarely creates an optical effect where shapes appear to advance or recede. The palette consists of saturated oranges, purples, and reds, which are balanced to maintain a sense of equilibrium across the surface. There is no attempt to represent physical objects or external reality. Instead, the focus remains on the mechanics of sight and the way the human eye processes geometric relationships.
Vasarely often referred to his system as the 'alphabet plastique'. He believed that by standardising these units, art could be reproduced and disseminated widely, moving away from the notion of the unique, hand-crafted object. The precision of the lines and the flat application of colour are characteristic of his screenprints from this period. The work functions as a study in modular design, where each section contributes to an overall sense of order. By stripping away narrative content, the artist invites the viewer to engage directly with the formal properties of the image. This print reflects his interest in the intersection of mathematics, science, and aesthetics, providing a clear view into the structured logic that defined his career.
