A classical composition by Emile Bernard featuring three female nudes in a pastoral setting, rendered with sculptural form and a restrained palette.
Emile Bernard, a contemporary of Paul Gauguin and a participant in the Pont-Aven school, produced this work during a period when he moved away from his earlier experimental Synthetist style towards a more classical, academic approach. After the Bath, The Nymphs displays a clear interest in the tradition of the nude, echoing the compositions of the Old Masters while maintaining the simplified, flattened forms that defined his earlier career.
The painting depicts three female figures in a pastoral setting. Their bodies are rendered with smooth, sculptural volume, set against a dark, simplified background that pushes the figures to the front of the pictorial space. The arrangement of the women, with one seated upright and two others reclining, creates a rhythmic, interlocking composition. The drapery, rendered in soft pinks and ochres, provides a textural contrast to the pale skin tones of the figures. Bernard uses a restrained palette, focusing on the interplay between light and shadow to define the anatomy of the subjects.
Unlike the more radical, decorative works of his youth, this piece reflects Bernard's later return to traditional values in art. He sought to reconcile the lessons of modernism with the structural clarity of the Renaissance. The figures possess a sense of weight and permanence, grounded by the dark, earthy tones of the ground. The work avoids excessive detail, allowing the viewer to focus on the balance of the forms and the quiet, static nature of the scene. It is a representative example of the artist's attempt to synthesise his avant-garde origins with a more formal, historical aesthetic.
