A geometric abstraction by Paul Klee, using a grid of colour blocks to suggest the form of a flowering tree.
Paul Klee produced this work in 1925, during his tenure at the Bauhaus in Dessau. The composition demonstrates his systematic approach to colour theory and spatial organisation. Klee arranges a grid of small, rectangular colour blocks across the canvas, creating a mosaic effect that suggests the organic form of a tree through purely geometric means. The central cluster of lighter, warmer tones emerges from a darker, more muted background, mimicking the way light might catch the blossoms of a tree against a shadowed canopy.
Klee often explored the relationship between musical rhythm and visual art. In this piece, the repetition of the rectangular units creates a visual cadence. The variation in hue, from soft pinks and yellows to deep blues and greens, provides a sense of depth without relying on traditional perspective. The paint application is textured, allowing the weave of the canvas to remain visible, which adds a tactile quality to the geometric structure. By reducing the subject to its essential components, Klee invites the viewer to perceive the essence of the tree rather than a literal representation. This method of abstraction reflects his interest in the underlying structures of nature and his belief that art should make the invisible visible. The work remains a primary example of his ability to balance rigorous intellectual planning with a sensitive, intuitive use of colour.
