A 1652 portrait by Ferdinand Bol, depicting a young man in a dark coat leaning against a stone balustrade.
Ferdinand Bol, a pupil of Rembrandt, produced this portrait in 1652. The work displays the technical proficiency characteristic of the Dutch Golden Age. The subject, a young man with shoulder-length hair, stands behind a stone balustrade. He wears a dark coat with white cuffs and a collar featuring distinctive tassels. His posture is relaxed, with one arm resting on the stone structure, a common compositional device in seventeenth-century portraiture to suggest ease and status.
The background consists of a muted, atmospheric outdoor setting. The soft lighting focuses attention on the sitter, whose expression is calm and direct. Bol employs a controlled palette, using the contrast between the dark garment and the lighter skin tones to create a sense of volume. The brushwork is precise, particularly in the rendering of the fabric textures and the subtle play of light across the sitter's face. The balustrade serves to separate the figure from the background, providing a sense of depth without distracting from the primary subject.
Bol was highly regarded during his lifetime for his ability to capture the likeness and social standing of his sitters. This portrait is representative of his mature style, where he moved away from the heavy chiaroscuro of his teacher toward a more refined, elegant approach. The composition is balanced, with the figure positioned slightly off-centre to create a natural, unforced appearance. The work remains a clear example of the portraiture conventions prevalent in the Netherlands during the mid-seventeenth century, documenting both the fashion and the artistic sensibilities of the period.
