A delicate watercolour illustration by Edmund Dulac from his 1909 edition of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam, capturing a quiet, atmospheric domestic scene.
This illustration by Edmund Dulac is one of the plates created for the 1909 edition of Edward FitzGerald's translation of The Rubaiyat of Omar Khayyam. Dulac, a French-born artist who settled in London, became a central figure in the early twentieth-century gift book market. His work for this volume demonstrates his ability to synthesise Persian motifs with the aesthetic sensibilities of the European fin de siècle.
The composition depicts a domestic scene within an architectural setting defined by pointed arches and tiled surfaces. A woman stands to the right, pouring liquid from a vessel into a bowl held by a seated man. The figures are rendered with delicate line work and a palette of muted earth tones, soft blues, and ochres. Dulac employs a flat, decorative approach to the space, which draws inspiration from Persian miniature painting while maintaining the illustrative clarity required for high-quality book production.
Dulac's approach to the Rubaiyat is characterised by a sense of quiet observation. He avoids overly dramatic gestures, preferring to focus on the textures of the clothing, the patterns on the floor coverings, and the subtle interaction between the figures. The smoke rising from the central vessel adds a layer of atmosphere to the scene, suggesting a moment of ritual or daily life. This print captures the specific period of British publishing history when the physical book was treated as a luxury object, with illustrations serving as essential components of the reader's experience. The work remains a representative example of Dulac's technical skill in watercolour, particularly in his handling of light and shadow within a confined, interior environment.
