A detailed scene from The Tale of Genji, rendered in the traditional Tosa school style with gold leaf accents and precise ink work.
This work depicts a scene from the Tamakazura chapter of The Tale of Genji, the classic work of Japanese literature attributed to Murasaki Shikibu. Tosa Mitsuyoshi, a master of the Tosa school, employs the traditional Yamato-e style to render this narrative moment. The composition utilises the fukinuki-yatai technique, or blown-off roof, which allows the viewer to observe the interior activities of the courtly figures from an elevated perspective.
Figures are arranged across a green tatami floor, their postures and layered robes reflecting the rigid social protocols of the Heian period. The artist uses fine, controlled lines to define the facial features and the elaborate patterns of the silk garments. Gold leaf clouds, known as kin-un, are strategically placed across the composition to obscure certain areas, create depth, and guide the eye through the narrative space. These gold elements contrast with the muted tones of the architecture and the saturated colours of the textiles.
As a representative of the Tosa school, Mitsuyoshi maintains a focus on historical subject matter and decorative precision. The inclusion of natural elements, such as the pine trees and water visible beyond the veranda, provides a sense of seasonal context. The work functions as a visual record of aristocratic life, prioritising clarity of narrative and adherence to established aesthetic conventions. The balance between the architectural geometry and the organic forms of the figures creates a structured, orderly environment. This print captures the refined atmosphere of the imperial court, offering a glimpse into the literary and visual culture of early seventeenth-century Japan.
