A nocturnal pastoral scene by Samuel Palmer, featuring a luminous crescent moon over a harvested cornfield in the English countryside.
Produced during his period in Shoreham, Kent, this work captures the intense, visionary quality of Samuel Palmer's early career. Palmer moved to the village of Shoreham in 1826, where he developed a unique style influenced by William Blake and the English countryside. This specific piece demonstrates his preoccupation with the nocturnal world, where the rural environment is transformed by the presence of the moon and stars.
The composition is dominated by a large, luminous crescent moon that casts a glow over the harvested cornfield. Palmer employs a dense application of pigment, using gum arabic to achieve a jewel-like surface that catches the light. The figure of the harvester, leaning on a staff, provides a sense of scale and human presence within the vast, darkened field. The evening star, positioned in the upper right, acts as a counterpoint to the moon, creating a balanced tension across the dark sky.
Palmer's technique in this period involved layering washes of watercolour with opaque gouache, allowing him to build up texture and depth. The colours are deep and saturated, moving away from the naturalistic palettes of his contemporaries toward a more subjective, emotional interpretation of the rural scene. The rounded, swelling forms of the hills and the rhythmic arrangement of the corn stooks reflect his desire to depict the fertility and abundance of the earth. This work is a primary example of the Shoreham period, where Palmer sought to express a spiritual connection to the land through a highly personal, imaginative lens. It remains a significant example of British Romantic art, showing the artist's ability to imbue a simple agricultural scene with a sense of mystery and quietude.
